About

Ghosts of the Great Highway is the debut studio album by American indie folk band Sun Kil Moon, released on November 4, 2003, through Jetset Records. The project was founded by Mark Kozelek, formerly of Red House Painters, and the album marked a continuation of his introspective songwriting and atmospheric guitar work. The album features performances from former Red House Painters member Anthony Koutsos, Geoff Stanfield, and Tim Mooney of American Music Club. It combines elements of folk rock, slowcore, and americana. Many of the tracks reference boxers, including “Salvador Sanchez” and “Duk Koo Kim,” the latter of which is a 14-minute-long centerpiece of the album. Thematically, the album explores memory, loss, and introspection, grounded in Kozelek’s narrative lyricism and subtle musical dynamics. Upon release, Ghosts of the Great Highway received widespread critical acclaim. It was named one of the best albums of 2003 by several publications and has since become a cult favorite. A remastered version with bonus tracks was released in 2007 on Kozelek’s own label, Caldo Verde Records.
