There is no denying that Parliament was running out of ideas as the ‘70s came to a close. After venturing into outer space and deepest ocean, George Clinton didn’t know quite what to do next with the P-Funk concept. In another astronomical turn, <i>Gloryhallastoopid</i> attempts to explain how “the funk” created the universe, but the concept here is looser than ever, and some lineup changes have diluted the group’s sound. Most notably, keyboard maestro Bernie Worrell is not credited as a songwriter on any tracks, for the first time in the group’s history. Though the songs are predictably enjoyable, “The Big Bang Theory” reprises the groove from “Aqua Boogie” while “Party People” and “May We Bang You?” come dangerously close to the sort of conformist disco that Parliament always opposed. Nonetheless, there are hidden gems. “Gloryhallastoopid” and “The Freeze (Sizzaleenmean)” epitomize the group’s rambling, eccentric rhythms, while “Colour Me Funky” is an eerie, moody jam that could be taken as George Clinton’s interpretation of blues.
