Don’t let the band name fool you. This is not a death metal band, but an excellent country-influenced rock ‘n’ roll band from Bloomington, Indiana. They have their dark moments but it’s mostly in the dour humor that hides underneath their free-swinging rumble (“You Don’t Miss Twice (When You’re Shaving With a Knife)”). “Kentucky Bourbon” broadcasts like an old-time radio show. “As Long As There Is Whiskey In the World” shuffles with a joyful country romp. “On the Dark Streets Below” adds horns for a festive spaghetti-western vibe. “King of the Gutters, Prince of the Dogs” stumbles with percussion that bumps into the end tables as the vocals scramble for the light switch with a folk-rock melody that’s pure and easy. “Piece By Piece” shakes with a muddy garage rock tremble to its old-time country-ballad frame. Sarah Balliet’s cello and keyboards form an atmospheric web that leaves plenty of room for singer Adam Turla to craft his tales that sound as if he’s remembering a different time and place before man was interrupted by technology.
