About
Guitar Man is an Elvis Presley album released by RCA Records in January 1981. The album consists of ten songs that Presley's longtime producer, Felton Jarvis, took and re-imagined for a contemporary sound. The instrumentation and backing singers from the original recordings were stripped away for new instrumentation. The process began on January 15, 1980, and lasted through November 11, 1980, with 40 songs being reworked; a later CD reissue of the album included additional tracks from these sessions. Singer-songwriter Jerry Reed was recruited to lay down the guitar work on the new version of the song "Guitar Man", which he had done the same on the original Elvis recording in 1967. This time, instead of an acoustic guitar, Reed used an electric guitar that gave the song a more modern sound. In the United States, the album peaked at number 49 on the Billboard albums chart and number 6 on the Billboard country albums chart.

In 1980 Elvis' long-time producer and friend, Felton Jarvis went back into the studio with a bunch of Elvis vocal tracks to produce a 'new' Elvis album. No one else would have had better insight into what kind of music Elvis might have recorded had he been alive in 1980.
The end result was the 'Guitar Man' album released early in 1981.
The album was a moderate success reaching number 49 on the album chart and number 6 on the country album chart in the US. (In Australia the album made #39) The single 'Guitar Man' did better, reaching 28 on the Pop Chart, 16 on the Adult Contemporary Chart, and number 1 on the Country Chart in the US (this turned out to be Elvis' last appearance in the US Top 40 and his last US number 1 single until 2002 when the 'A Little Less Conversation' remix topped the US singles sales chart). The album and the song were also modest hits in the UK. 'Loving Arms' was released as the second single from the album and was a Top Ten Country hit.
Unfortunately Jarvis died just before the album was released and did not see the fruits of his labour.
The album, together with 10 other previously unreleased mixes, was reissued on CD in 2000 as Too Much Monkey Business (Europe 2000) (opens in a new tab).
