When the three sisters who make up A-WA burst onto the Israeli pop scene in 2016 with their debut album, <i>Habib Galbi</i>, they were an oasis of bright color. They transformed the title track—originally a Yemeni folk song—into a neon-flecked electronic stunner, topped with powerful harmonies and an M.I.A.-esque attitude. “Zangabila” infuses Ethiopian music with a New Orleans backbeat and a sprinkle of dub, illustrating A-WA’s profound ability to turn clashing sonic ideas into a cultural union.
