First released anywhere in the world in the U.K. on Polydor 56139 on December 16th, 1966, coupling "Hey Joe" and "Stone Free" and crediting "The Jimi Hendrix Experience"; some editions credit Jimi Hendrix.

"Stone Free" recorded at De Lane Lea Studios, London, Wed. 2nd Nov. 1966.
Entered U.K. Charts on Thu. 29 Dec 1966, achieving # 6 position on the 4th of Jan. and spending 11 consecutive weeks on chart.
A version of "Hey Joe" was first put on single in 1965 by the Californian rock band The Leaves as Hey Joe, Where You Gonna Go? / Be With You (US 1965) (opens in a new tab), without writing credits, to be on later releases credited to Chet Powers.
Already in 1962, William Moses Roberts Jr., artistname Billy Roberts copyrighted the song stating he had written the song. But because it draws on so many well-established blues song conventions, the song seems considerably older.
