About

"I Dreamed of Electric Sheep - Ho sognato pecore elettriche" is the eighteenth studio album by the Italian music group Premiata Forneria Marconi, released on October 22, 2021, through Inside Out Music. Amidst chaotic time, the experienced Italian musician, having overcome the challenges of remote collaboration and prioritizing health, provide their perspective on the current state of the world. The bilingual approach not only reaches a global audience but also emphasizes the band's root, posing the profound question from the classic sci-fi novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" by Philip K. Dick (which inspired two major motion pictures: Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049). The focus of this brief commentary leans toward the Italian version, given that it is the band's native language. As an opening, "Mondi Paralleli" reaffirms the band's high level of musical education. With an orchestral attack worthy of skilled musician, a series of rhythm, melodie, and solos unfolds in the pure style of modern progressive rock. They make the most of production, presenting solid guitars in tone, abundant keyboard, and a robust and impactful drumming, as it should be. In just a few minute, they already raise expectation. "Umani Alieni" is an uninterrupted continuation. It initially eases tension to later rebuild it between each line and verse. Of course, the vocals carry that delicate timbre that almost declaims while singing. Mr. Franz Di Cioccio ages very gracefully. "Ombre Amiche" is a ballad. More focused on building through layers of sound, it gives total prominence to keyboard, synthesizer, and the piano. With some programmed percussion, it even echoes new wave and electronic music in the style of legends like Vangelis . Small touche, very small, but very pleasing. "La Grande Corsa" is wonderful. Something grows in this song immediately: hopeful, grandiloquent, joyful. It could even be said to resemble creative works like Dream Theater's Images & Word. A similar vibe. "AtmoSpace" is that reflective side more inclined towards humanity in a dubious transition to a life crowded with technology. In the atmospheric, electronic, and acoustic realm, they vie between immensity and simplicity. Musically, they prove that the lack of limitations in the genres they handle keeps their sound fresh. Next, we move to "Pecore Elettriche" a peak in the album that, in fact, remains very consistent with Premiata Forneria Marconi's more seventies-oriented side. "Mr. Non Lo So" is the most lighthearted song on the album, in a way, due to the folk elements of the violin and the groovy rhythm section. "Il Respiro Del Tempo"is the musical poem of the album. Here, a new wave atmosphere is fully breathed. Through programmed drum, a bagpipe effect, and well-crafted layers with guitars and keyboard, it transports us directly to a world of tranquility. Additionally, Ian Anderson's participation on the flute is the finishing touch that evokes bucolic, archaic landscape, detached from the city's hustle and chaotic routine. It is a hymn to life, a gratitude for emotion, the desire to live it. The significant part of the album could easily end here. "Transumanza" is more than a conclusion; it's an epilogue. Along with "Transumanza Jam", it is a sum and a note. There can be nothing more pleasing than listening to a group of virtuoso musicians unfold with such taste and naturalne. A fitting closure. Good intuition in every note. Certainly, it must be clarified that, definitively, two different works are perceived, lyrically speaking. Conceptually, it feels consistent. Musically, it is a total triumph because, once the work is finished, there is indeed a desire to listen to the other version and then replay both CD. In the end, it is the experience of a band giving us the essence of their long-standing career. The work does not adhere to conventional structure, as one would expect. The passages and motifs are that classic blend of rock and jazz with baroque elements as imitation and variation of theme. Without presenting simple, let alone immediate thing, it is capable of engaging the listener. Of course, let's not forget their message. After all, music is a creation in a close relationship between musicians and the audience, giving vitality to passion, bringing u, even if just a little, closer to one another.
