With a new producer (Jason Suecof) and a new guitarist (Kevin Quirion), Deicide revived the straightforward ferocity of their early years for 2013’s <i>In the Minds of Evil</i>. As one of the most respected young producers in death metal, Suecof was naturally attracted to working with Deicide, one of the genre’s oldest and most respected units. Like every metalhead of his age, Suecof was heavily influenced by Deicide’s classic 1992 album <i>Legion</i> and was eager to reprise that sound and style. Amazingly, the old band were able to shift back into that mode with total conviction. If anything, the intervening years have made them even tougher and more fearsome. They vanquished all recent attempts at atmospherics, melody, and rhythmic experimentation and instead embraced the pure pummeling power of their youth. This is an album that won't let up. In some ways it's the most honest and unadorned album Deicide have ever made. It’s certainly their most punk-influenced. “In the Minds of Evil” and “Godkill” come at you with the force of an unhinged locomotive, proving that hostility, if properly channeled, is the purist form of energy.
