By 1993’s <i>Where You Been</i>, acoustic instrumentation had become commonplace on Dinosaur Jr. records, but this set—captured that December at New York’s preeminent punk dive—marked the first time guitar guru J Mascis performed unplugged. Naturally, he leans toward the gentler entries in his songbook, downsizing the proggy pastorale of “Thumb” into a campfire hymn. Mascis also reveals himself to be the rare artist who can folk up Lynyrd Skynyrd (“Every Mother’s Son”) and punk hero Greg Sage (“On the Run”) with equal aplomb.
