About
Donald Glover has already made the transition from comedy writer and performer to MC seem effortless and this EP recasts him as an R&B crooner with similar ease. His voice is rich with bravado, anxiety, joy, and pain on glittering ’80s throwback “Pop Thieves” and “Sober”’s tuneful throb. “Retro (Rough)” reprises some of his smart-mouthed swagger, but Kauai is further proof that Glover’s greatest asset is a refusal to stand still.
