In 1979, Kenny Rogers followed his breakthrough, <i>The Gambler</i>, with another eclectic platinum seller. <i>Kenny</i> is most famous for megahits “Coward of the County” (which puts a tale of a conflicted pacifist to a Waylon beat) and “You Decorated My Life,” where Rogers’ husky, heartwarming pipes wrap around an instant pop classic. But along the way, he tackles jazz standards (“Old Folks”) and funky, greasy country-soul (“Tulsa Turnaround”) without losing an ounce of that game-winning <i>gravitas</i>.
