Combining greatest hits with B-sides, demos, and live tracks, <i>Land</i> offers a suitably unconventional overview of Patti Smith’s output as an iconoclastic songwriter, punk rocker, and poet. The first disc covers her most iconic songs, from her barn-burning 1975 rework of Van Morrison’s “Gloria” to her 1988 protest anthem “People Have the Power.” Disc No. 2 features buried gems from more recent years, like the moody, clarinet-adorned studio jam “Higher Learning” and a scorching live cut of “25th Floor” that bursts with righteous fury.
