About
Neil Young marked the Reagan years with experiments in electronic music and rockabilly, but in the midst of it all, he made this utterly ’80s pop record, smoothing out his electric-guitar grind with synths and push-button percussion. The contrast between the slick production and Neil’s subversive essence yields moments of delicious frisson, like when he eulogizes the ’60s atop the tick-tock beat and squealing leads of “Hippie Dream.” And on “Touch the Night,” he delivers an elegy about a car crash via fist-pumping hair metal.
