About
Prefab Sprout never caught on beyond college radio in the United States. Their gentle whisper of jazz-tinged synth-pop with subtle lyrical shadings never resonated with the masses in the heartland. But throughout the ‘80s and sporadically in the ‘90s, Sprout issued recordings that remain among the era’s most intriguing. Paddy McAloon’s soulful croon matched with ominous backing vocals and keyboard-guitar weaves made for a distinctive sound. This collection covers the group up to ‘90’s masterful <i>Jordan: The Comeback</i>. “When Love Breaks Down” defines the style as McAloon spies love and romance with a jaundiced eye. Their biggest U.K. hit, “The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll” pumps with the ebullience and absurdity of great pop music. “Cars and Girls” pokes fun at Bruce Springsteen and his eternal themes. “Hey Manhattan!” looks at the upside and downside of the legendary isle. “We Let the Stars Go” continues singer Paddy McAloon’s obsession with love and the galaxies. “The Sound of Crying” and “If You Don’t Love Me” make their first album appearance.
