About
Recorded during a three-night stand at West Hollywood’s Roxy in April 1998, Live at the Roxy gained significance after the 2000 passing of founding bassist Dennis Danell. This album isn't just a document of the revered Orange County band in its prime, coming off the crossover success of White Light, White Heat, White Trash and its smash single “I Was Wrong”; it's Danell's final appearance on record. The Roxy setlist shows the breadth of Social Distortion's career, stretching back to “Another State of Mind” and “1945,” which were written when Danell and group leader Mike Ness were barely out of high school. Those early songs hold their own alongside “Story of My Life,” “Ball & Chain," and “Prison Bound,” anthems that defined Social Distortion's blend of rockabilly grit, blues wisdom, and pure punk. The band’s beefy songs were custom-built for the intensity of the live setting. Longtime listeners will enjoy Ness’ spoken introductions to songs like “Prison Bound,” in which he connects the struggle and alienation of young punks to the outlaw journey portrayed in songs by Johnny Cash (whose “Ring of Fire” is covered in the grand finale).
