The last North American show of the Sex Pistols with Sid Vicious took place at the Winterland Ballroom of San Francisco on January 14, 1978.
On January 13, Paul Cook and Steve Jones did a one-hour interview for the KSAN radio, while Sid Vicious and Johnny Rotten did another one the day of the show.
Parts of those interviews were released over the years on various official (opens in a new tab) and unofficial releases.
The band played a 20-minute soundcheck before the concert.
The songs performed in full (« Belsen Was A Gas », « Pretty Vacant », « Problems » and « No Feelings ») were released on the Hello!!! Winterland The lost 1978 Soundtrack E.P. (opens in a new tab) unofficial single.
After the support sets of The Nuns and the Avengers (which were also recorded and are officially available on digital format), the Sex Pistols played a 14-song, 60-minute concert with a main set of 13 songs (« God Save The Queen », « I Wanna Be Me », « Seventeen », « New York », « E.M.I. », « Belsen Was A Gas », « Bodies », « Holidays In The Sun », « Liar », « No Feelings », « Problems », « Pretty Vacant » and « Anarchy In The U.K. ») and one single encore number (« No Fun »).
Three different recordings exist for the show.
The first one is an incomplete audience recording of good quality which is missing the last song « No Fun ».
The second source is the very good KSAN stereo radiobroadcast, which is unfortunately slightly incomplete on all official CD releases like the Winterland Concert (opens in a new tab), with « Bodies » being edited in the middle of around 30 seconds.
The last and most complete source is the 2-cam proshot video of the concert.
Albeit having a very good mono soundtrack, the complete video was officially released on various VHS (opens in a new tab) and DVD (opens in a new tab) over the years.
Taken from the mono soundtrack of the video, the Never Mind Winterland (opens in a new tab) unofficial release was the only complete version of the concert on CD until it was reissued in 2025 on the Live In The U.S.A. 1978 (opens in a new tab) official 3CD compilation with the complete Atlanta (opens in a new tab) and Dallas (opens in a new tab) concerts.
