Van Halen’s grinding style during Sammy Hagar’s tenure is captured in all its deafening glory on their live recordings. Pile-driving cuts drawn from <i>For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge</i>—including the fast and chaotic “Judgement Day” and the crunchy, midtempo “In ’N’ Out”—feature all four musicians hammering out grooves with a soldier’s sense of duty. Veering into the Diamond Dave era, the results are similar, as they turn the poppy “Jump” into gritty riff rock.
