If there was a late ‘90s Christian rock album that <i>should’ve</i> crossed over into the mainstream market, it was the Newsboys’ <i>Love Liberty Disco</i>. The Australia-nurtured group had already earned a solid fan base thanks to a decade’s worth of recording. Yet this song collection was a cut above the rest — building upon the cheeky humor and feisty rock attack of previous releases, the Newsboys achieved something special here. The album boasts a hip electronica-influenced pop sound, elegant melodies, and a warmly inclusive lyric message. Singer Peter Furler’s high-gliding vocal presence is surrounded by shimmering strings, coolly pulsing beats and touches of ‘70s R&B guitar. “Beautiful Sound,” “Say You Need Love,” and “I Would Give Everything” radiate an uplifting, slightly trippy spirit. “Good Stuff” has a touch of funk-rock grit, while “Fall On You” revels in otherworldly ambiance.
