This collection of love songs reveals Elton John to be a dreamer, a romantic, and a truth-teller. Tunes like the mounting ballad “Someone Saved My Life Tonight” and the R&B-tinged “Sacrifice” find Elton defining hardcore relationship troubles with inescapable melodies and poetic sensibilities. “Blue Eyes” and Cole Porter’s “True Love” (a duet with Kiki Dee) are deceptively poignant in slick-pop veneers, and the absolutely majestic “Circle of Life” (from <i>The Lion King</i>) could be the aural equivalent of what it feels like to fall in love.
