This 1956 compilation gathers Decca tracks dating back to 1945, capturing Fitzgerald in the period before her move to Verve. Whereas Verve sought to brand her as a polished, authoritative interpreter of the American songbook, the aesthetic here tends to be rawer, with a focus on Ella’s virtuosity both in simple, riff-oriented swing (“Later,” “Rough Ridin’”) and risk-taking bebop (her stunning scat performances on “How the High Moon,” “Air Mail Special,” and “Oh, Lady Be Good!” are landmarks in the idiom). Ella sets a high bar on ballads as well, including “Angel Eyes” and the old-school standard “Basin Street Blues,” complete with a dead-on Louis Armstrong impersonation.
