In September of 1959, New York City radio stations like WABC and WCBS banned Bobby Darin's smash hit "Mack the Knife". The ban came in response to local youth gang violence and high-profile stabbing incidents in the city, as station executives feared the upbeat song's murderous lyrics about a killer might encourage more knife attacks.
