About

The Rolling Stones have had such a long career that it takes multiple “Greatest Hits” collections to cover all the eras. Made in the Shade was released in 1975 while the band figured out who would replace then newly-departed guitarist Mick Taylor. (Ron Wood won the job.) Shade collects ten highlights from the group’s previous four studio albums with Taylor. It’s hard to argue against any collection that includes timeless classics such as “Brown Sugar,” “Tumbling Dice,” the ballad “Angie,” “Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)” and “It’s Only Rock n’ Roll (But I Like It).” Throw in Keith Richards’ vocal turn for “Happy,” the wistful country ballad “Wild Horses” and the classic Stones romp of “Dance Little Sister” and you have a compact look at the Rolling Stones of the early 1970s. The Stones had been on such a hot streak that, though it only covers four years, 1971-1974, the collection could have been twice the length.
