James Brown made an astonishing 10 albums for Polydor from 1971 through 1975; the highlights appear here, along with some enticing alternate versions. His funk was getting increasingly harder and his worldview more sociopolitically minded. His smoldering sensuality is as undeniable as ever on tracks like the steamy “Hot Pants,” but from his slow-burning assault on the insidiousness of addiction on “King Heroin” to his slip-sliding State of the Union address “Funky President (People It’s Bad),” Brown had more on his mind than getting on the good foot.
