While they're perennially popular in NYC, The Dictators are underrated in rock 'n' roll history everywhere else. 1975's <i>Go Girl Crazy</i> was ahead of its time, and <i>Manifest Destiny</i> is the sound of a band feeling its way to a mainstream that would never catch on. Andy Shernoff was a master pop songwriter, and Ross "The Boss" Friedman and Scott "Top Ten" Kempner created a formidable twin-guitar attack. The production here is a tad muddy in spots, but songs like "Exposed," "Sleepin' with the T.V. On," "Disease" (with a brilliant intro from Handsome Dick Manitoba), and a cover of The Stooges' "Search and Destroy" are passionate pleas for the old values of rock 'n' roll to stay at the frontline. "Hey Boys" is a touch of sweetness, while "Science Has Gone Too Far" and "Young Fast Scientific" are as tough and loud as the band would ever be.
