Even before he made soundtracks, Daniel Lopatin made movie music, projects whose intellectual reach and conceptual razzle-dazzle never got in the way of their primitive human appeal—a duality that has made Oneohtrix Point Never one of the most accessible experimental musicians of his generation. This career-highlight soundtrack to the Josh Safdie-directed, Timothée Chalamet-starring <i>Marty Supreme</i> streamlines his vision into the kind of bits, bites, and cues that convey big emotional information in almost no space at all, from the moony New Age of “Marty’s Dream” (hat tip Ray Lynch) to the ersatz romanticism of “Holocaust Honey” (hat tip Wendy Carlos) to the misty heroics of “I Love You, Tokyo” (hat tip Vangelis). As with OPN records, the genius here is how Lopatin manages to make such artificial sounds carry such deep and instantaneously recognizable feeling, and to make that transubstantiation feel like play instead of serious creative work (is there a difference?).
