About
Holly Golightly is one of the veterans of the British neo-garage scene that’s been led into wonderfully primitive territory by her former bandleader Billy Childish. On her own, Golightly is slightly more refined. Slightly. With her backing band, the Brokeoffs, providing a raw, punishing backbeat, Golightly heads into roots music with savage intensity. “Two Left Feet” is an uncompromising blues number with the sound of a serrated slide guitar and a beat that pounds with the deliberate monotony of a chain gang. “Murder In My Mind” trembles with a tremolo-ed guitar line and a laidback blues slink that’s reminiscent of the Rolling Stones at their darkest hour, while “When He Comes” sounds like a sped-up take on the Stones’ cover of “Prodigal Son.” For a dab of sweetness, Golightly strums a few country hillbilly tunes. The title track connects with a backporch singalong sway. “Blood On the Saddle” sounds like an untrained choir singing their hearts out in an empty church. The traditional “Jack O’Diamonds” makes a perfect closing, fitting as perfectly as it does next to Golightly’s timeless originals.
