This title may reference the Ellington tune, but don’t let that fool you: this album isn't a set of ballads. Indeed, pianist Oscar Peterson, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Bobby Durham start things off (as they often did) with an upbeat tune. While Peterson is the center of attention here, Jones drives this along with a muscular assuredness and even a nice solo that adds a lot to “Green Dolphin Street.” “Summertime” is a flurry of notes by the pianist, with each one seemingly delivered emphatically enough to shake the floor. Never one to waste a solo opening, Peterson offers a lengthy classic on “Who Can I Turn To” before the band takes it up a blistering notch. He goes it all alone for a lovely “Someone to Watch Over Me.” Recorded live in 1968 at the legendary home studio of MPS Records’ Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer, the sound is so good you can hear Peterson moan when he digs in.
