About
"Midian" is the fourth studio album by English extreme metal band Cradle of Filth. It was released on 30 October 2000 through Music for Nations. The album marked the return of guitarist Paul Allender and introduced drummer Adrian Erlandsson and keyboard player Martin Powell to the band’s lineup. It also featured narration by Doug Bradley, known for his roles in the films "Hellraiser" and "Hellbound". The album’s themes were primarily inspired by Clive Barker’s novel "Cabal" and its film adaptation "Nightbreed". According to vocalist Dani Filth, the album functions partly as a concept work, with the title referring to a mythical place inhabited by monstrous beings. The central track, "Tortured Soul Asylum", focuses on this setting, while other songs depict characters associated with it. Doug Bradley, who appeared in "Nightbreed", contributed spoken narration to several tracks. Additional thematic elements draw from religious and literary sources. The name "Midian" also refers to a location and people described in biblical texts, where Midian is associated with a region connected to the figure of Moses. References to Midian and its inhabitants also appear in Islamic tradition. The fictional Midian depicted in "Cabal" and "Nightbreed" is portrayed as a hidden refuge for outcasts and monsters. The song "Cthulhu Dawn" references the Cthulhu Mythos created by H. P. Lovecraft. The opening line of "Lord Abortion" is a quotation from the film "Brazil". "Midian" was released by Music for Nations and reached number 63 on the UK Albums Chart. The cover artwork was created by J. K. Potter and was later reused for his 2002 anthology "Embrace the Mutation". The song "Her Ghost in the Fog" was released as a music video directed by Alex Chandon and received airplay on music television channels. The track also appeared in the film "Ginger Snaps" and the video game "Brütal Legend". The album was reissued in 2012 by The End Records.
