On their third album, <i>More Than You Think You Are</i>, Matchbox Twenty build upon the arena rock that brought them massive success while adding a few fresh touches, including keyboards, some pedal steel guitar, and even a full choir on one song. Rob Thomas’ dramatic and powerful vocals remain central to their overall sound, but this is no one-man show; the band’s versatility keeps the songs interesting and dynamic, giving these tunes the space to breath and leaving room for catchy riffs and piano fills that help the songs to soar. Whether it’s a rocker (“Feel”), radio-friendly pop (“Disease,” which was co-written by Thomas and Mick Jagger), or a power ballad (“Hand Me Down,” “The Difference”), this quintet knows how to deliver melodic and straightforward rock with a punch.
