About
Electric Wurms feature Flaming Lips members Steven Drozd and Wayne Coyne, along with several other indie musicians all looking to explore the experimental prog and Krautrock of the ‘70s in greater detail. Coyne takes a backseat to Drozd and lets the group simply do their own thing. A compact cover of Yes’ “Heart of the Sunrise” is the group’s most accessible track and the reason for many to check out this debut album. But it isn’t the only song worth hearing here. “Transform!!!” is a brutally good jam, with the vocals possessing true mania and the bass guitar simply stealing the show with an intense, elliptical pattern that when combined with the boxy drums creates hilarious tension. A meandering track like “Living” is closer to expectations, with its seven-minute jam time feeling most natural, whereas other tracks have obviously been truncated in order to make them more accessible. Naturally, Flaming Lips fans need this, but so do fans of Krautrock, psych-punk, and freakouts.
