<i>Narkopop</i> is Wolfgang Voigt’s first album as Gas since the career-defining <i>Pop</i> came out in 2000. Thankfully, almost nothing has changed. Darker and eerier than <i>Pop</i>, <i>Narkopop</i> mixes vaporous drones, distant clangs, and the occasional throb of bass and drum for a sound by turns gorgeous, expansive, and unsettling—like a symphony drifting in an out of earshot across a vast train platform. At times, like on the martial stomp of “Narkopop 5” or the heavenly “Narkopop 7,” the sound snaps into meditative focus, only to melt away again.
