On the last of his albums with his pioneering country-rock outfit The First National Band, Michael Nesmith begins edging a little further away from overt country influences. Key collaborator Red Rhodes still fills the tracks with plaintive pedal-steel swoops, and there's a dreamy cover of the cowboy standard "Tumbling Tumbleweeds," but <i>Nevada Fighter</i>'s best moments are the bristling, bluesy rocker "Grand Ennui," the romantic, folk-inflected "Propinquity (I've Just Begun to Care)," and the atmospheric drama of the Harry Nilsson-penned "Rainmaker."
