Alison Krauss unpredictably shifted gears on her remarkable eighth album, balancing progressive "newgrass" tunes with adult contemporary ballads — all wrapped in traditional stringband instrumentation. The moving and romantic "Let Me Touch You For A While" unveils <i>New Favorite</i>, boasting exquisite dobro playing by Jerry Douglas. Union Station guitar player and singer Dan Tyminski keeps things pastoral with rootsy tones in "The Boy Who Wouldn't Hoe Corn" and in the coming-of-age narrative "Momma Cried." Krauss and Tyminski sing some of the most gorgeous harmonies of their entire discography on the lilting "Daylight." <i>New Favorite</i> won a Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album of the Year with the swooning single "The Lucky One" taking home a separate Grammy for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. There may not be anything here that sounds overtly timeworn like her breakthrough success with the soundtrack to 2000's <i>O Brother, Where Art Thou?</i>, but by blending bluegrass' roots into contemporary song craft, <i>New Favorite</i> takes on a life of its own.
