Few figures from the Woodstock era maintained their integrity and impeccable taste the way Richie Havens did; in the fifth decade of his career the iconic folk singer’s unflagging social conscience and ever-robust voice remained undiminished. Using spare acoustic arrangements, he renders The Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again” with acerbic immediacy and Jackson Browne’s “Lives In the Balance” with fatigued desperation. In its radiant melody, “(Can’t You Hear) Zeus’s Anger Roar” is hearteningly upbeat, and the title track carries all Havens’ hard-won hope.
