About
Ompa til du dør is the debut album by Kaizers Orchestra, released on 1 September 2001. The album received much critical praise upon release, and climbed the Norwegian Top 40 album charts all the way to the top, achieving record-breaking chart longevity. The album's title track, "Ompa til du dør" would later be voted the best song of the decade by the Norwegian people. The album's iconic cover is found on the decorative marquee of Rockheim, the Norwegian rock museum. Ompa til du dør remains one of the best-selling Norwegian rock albums of all time. After the dissolution of gnom, the band in which Kaizers Orchestra band members Janove Ottesen, Geir Zahl, Rune Solheim and Helge Risa had played in previously, songs intended for a new project were written in late 1999. "Katastrofen", which ironically never made the cut to their debut album, has been cited by Ottesen as being the first song ever written specifically with the Kaizers Orchestra project in mind. One of the earliest known performances of material which ended up on the album occurred at Det Beste Stedet in Sandne, Norway, where Ottesen and Zahl performed Kaizers Orchestra songs accompanied only by guitar. A demo was recorded in 2000, featuring many songs featured on the album as well as some which would be recorded in a proper studio and released later. The band wa, as a whole, disappointed with the demo, Ottesen and Zahl being frustrated at failing to bring their vision for the band's sound to tape. After signing a record deal with Broiler Farm, Norway's smallest independent label at the time, Kaizers Orchestra entered the studio. Their producer, Jørgen Træen and Stian Carstensen, the latter of which also had some creative input into the material, aided the band in succesfully bringing Ottesen and Zahl's vision to life. Fourteen tracks were recorded in six days (however, two track, "Abstinenser" and "Prosessen", were cut from the final release for unknown reasons) and on the seventh day, the band celebrated the completed recording session. A music video was shot for their first single, "Kontroll på kontinentet", which circulated heavily on music video shows on Norwegian television. Not expecting a huge sales succe, BroilerFarm printed a low number of copies for commercial release. After receiving exceedingly high critical praise and as a result, increasing popularity, the album quickly went out of print, requiring more to be made. The album slowly climbed the chart, reaching the #1 spot in the thirteenth week of 2002 and remained on the charts for a considerable length of time. It dropped out of the charts in 2003, after 49 combined weeks on the chart. The final sales figure is not known, but over 350,000 copies were reportedly sold. At the Spellemannsprisen award show in 2002, the album won the award for "Best Rock Album of 2001". In 2002, the album was re-released together with the Død manns tango EP in Norway and Denmark, and later in Europe with a slightly revised track list featuring songs from both the Død manns tango and Mann mot mann EP, as well as lyrics translated to English in the liner note. The limited print of the vinyl release remains a highly regarded collector's item to this day. .
