Other Lives by Other Lives

Other Lives is an Alt/Indie album by Other Lives, originally released in 2009. On Gatefold: 4 pressings tracked.

About

The members of Other Lives originally came together in 2004 as an instrumentals only project called Kunek, and while they’ve added vocals this time around, a cinematic and orchestral approach still infuses their music. The thoughtful and poetic lyrics and plaintive voice of Jesse Tabish fit perfectly with the gorgeous arrangements and delicate dynamics of these weighty songs. The talented quintet creates a sound that is symphonic and lush, with arpeggiated piano notes meshing with moaning cello to create a palpable feeling of melancholy that dominates. Guitars, mandolin, and some brass and reeds play subtle yet key roles as well, and the excellent drumming guides the songs along as on the mini epic “End of the Year,” a high point of the recording. The tempos are consistently slow and the melodies dark and forlorn, yet there’s a slow burn that makes the album dramatic and compelling without slipping into the mire. Fans of the Decemberists, Sufjan Stevens, and Belle and Sebastian would do well to check out this impressive debut.
