About
The audiovisual project of Nicholas Wood and Kat Day, The KVB move beyond their Joy Division variations for a sonic trip all their own on this 2014 mini-LP, <i>Out of Body</i>. With the help of Stereolab’s Joe Dilworth, who contributed live drums to these recordings, The KVB got the most out of their invitation from Brian Jonestown Massacre’s Anton Newcombe to record at his Berlin studio for a week last autumn. “All Around You” takes the KVB schematic and adds increasingly colorful synths that burst into further Technicolor for “From Afar.” Vocals are buried to best emphasize the textures and tones, while the rhythms <i>are</i> tighter than ever before (courtesy of Mr. Dilworth). “Heavy Eyes” and “Cartesian Bodies” melt into space, while “Across the Sea” brings a vibrancy to match Day’s ghostly vocals. It’s 24 minutes of subliminal bliss, with “Between Suns” finalizing the trip.
