About

Pedal steel guitars, a touch of brass, and further immersion in country rock makes the second Mojave 3 album very different from the hallucinatory western vibe of its debut, the excellent Ask Me Tomorrow. Any lingering influences of their Slowdive origins have been purged and Neil Halstead takes control, leaving Rachel Goswell to supply harmonies to gorgeous tunes such as "All Your Tears" and "Give What You Take." The Dylan influence is overtly pronounced on "Yer Feet," where Halstead ventures near the sound and feel of "Girl from the North Country," but with a slow crawl more in tune with Mojave 3's metabolism. Overall, these songs have a touching, forlorn quality. The organ tracing "Caught Beneath Your Heel" sounds like a ghost from Blonde on Blonde keeping watch over Halstead's trying spirit. "Keep It All Hid" has a muscular rhythm section adding an extra sprint to Halstead's step. Neil Young would be proud to call "Baby's Coming Home" a direct descendant of his early-'70s work. These traces of influences, however, don't deflect from Halstead's dominant voice.
