A palpable sense of purpose and joy runs through this L.A.-based band’s 1998 debut. Reflecting their city’s vast diversity, Ozomatli thread together <i>cumbia</i>, rap, funk, <i>salsa</i>, and more. People cheer, whistles blow, records scratch. “Eva” is a soulful love song swirling around Spanish guitar, while MC Chali 2na’s loose-limbed rhymes ground tracks like “Super Bowl Sundae.” Outspoken lyrics about police brutality and economic inequality remind us of the band members’ background as labor organizers.
