About
The Hungarian prog-rock band Piramis begin its 1977 debut album, Piramis I., with “Szabadnak Születtem,” a brilliant hybrid of Yes-inspired fantasy rock, replete with airtight vocal harmonies and Black Sabbath-esque riffs rocked at maximum volume. The standout cut “A Fénylõ Piramisok Arnyékában” boasts nearly 10 minutes of instrumental prog wherein a flurry of analog synthesizers chirp, beep, and squiggle over phased bass lines and versatile guitar work by Závodi János. Though the breakdowns here recall moments of The Doors' “The End,” the interweaving between keyboards and guitar share more DNA with the first three Bo Hansson albums. This is especially apparent after the seven-minute mark as the band treads more jazzy territories punctuated by searing-hot acid-rock guitar leads. With “Mondj Egy Mesét,” you can hear a heavy Meters influences with tighter drumming, funky clavinet notes replacing the Moog, and a hard-grooving bass punctuated by handclap rhythms. Keyboardist Gallai Péter switches to Fender Rhodes in the prog ballad “Hozd el a Tegnapot.”
