About

This is the "electric" extension of "Pickin' Up The Pieces" and Jim Messina's studio swan song with Poco. "Poco" was fuel for the fire of the band's live shows. "Hurry Up" and "You Better Think Twice" are the most recognizable tracks on the album. It touches on the country side with Dallas Frazier's "Honky Tonk Downstairs" and the chestnut "Don't Let It Pass By" which leads directly into the group's biggest experiment "Nobody's Fool/El Tonto De Nadie Regresa". The latter giving listeners a glimpse of early Loggins & Messina plus being the most dynamic live performance piece for the band through the 1972 concert season. It was played as a finale to a May 20, 1972, concert at the Mississippi River Festival (Edwardsville, IL) complete with Rusty Young running through the song's dramatic conclusion playing his steel guitar with a lawn chair. The brash and noisy "Keep On Believin'" was also released as a single B side a "My Kind Of Love". Music was the same for both but lyrics changed. The other experiment of the album is "Anyway Bye Bye". This is the most interesting track on "Poco" since it injects blues into the equation for the first and last time on Poco recordings. Once again, this is Messina's work, pushing the group into uncharted territory and attempting to divorce it from the country-rock genre he believed would go stale very quickly. When you are looking for the rock side of early country rock, this is a "must have" for your collection.
