When Australia’s Eddy Current Suppression Ring (named for an electrical gadget) spent one afternoon back in 2006 recording its electrifying self-titled debut, the band likely had no idea it’d soon be crowned king of the garage/post-punk scene (both here and there). <i>Primary Colours</i> followed that scrappy debut two years later, taking the intent and energy of ECSR’s debut and honing it ever so slightly into a more pointed (and dangerous) stick. Singer Brendan Suppression sounds uncannily like a young Iggy Pop, while the furious sturm’n’drang of Eddy Current’s guitars evoke the glory days of British post-punk: Wire, Swell Maps, and Alternative TV are conjured on blistering and disarmingly catchy tracks like “Memory Lane,” “Colour Television,” and “Which Way to Go.” It may seem bizarre to mention The Feelies in this company, but “That’s Inside of Me” has the same brilliant, tense windup that The Feelies captured so perfectly in their early days. <i>Primary Colours</i> will send post-punk fans of a certain age swooning and should light a fire under the younger crowd—this is what rock ’n’ roll should sound like.
