Psychopomp

About

Philadelphian Michelle Zauner experiments with synthesizers, fuzz pedals, and found audio footage to winning effect on her first full-length as Japanese Breakfast. Zauner’s voice slices through the heady textures in a way that adds weight to her lyrics, which grapple frankly with life’s more grueling moments. On the starlit “Heft,” she stares down the prospect of losing loved ones, while the jittery duet “Everybody Wants to Love You” fast-forwards through a relationship’s timeline, from the first encounter to breakfast-in-bed demands. Confident and unflinching, Psychopomp wins even when it’s chronicling hard times.
