About
"Results" is the ninth studio album by American singer and actress Liza Minnelli, released in 1989 by Epic Record. The album was produced by the Pet Shop Boys and Julian Mendelsohn, marking Minnelli's first venture into the dance music genre. To promote the album, four singles were released: "Losing My Mind" (the biggest hit from the album), "Don't Drop Bomb," "So Sorry, I Said," and "Love Pain," all of which charted in various countrie. A video album titled "Visible Results" was released in 1990, including three promotional music video. The critical reception for the album was favorable. Commercially, it became Minnelli's best-selling album and achieved the highest chart performance internationally in her career. It sold over 600,000 copies in Europe alone, earning gold certifications in the UK and Spain. The album's production began after Minnelli expressed her interest in making a pop music record, departing from her usual productions released by Columbia Record. Tom Watkin, manager of the Pet Shop Boy, suggested that Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe of the Pet Shop Boys could collaborate with Minnelli. Tennant, already a fan of Minnelli, began writing songs specifically for her. Minnelli recorded the vocals for the album in London while on tour in March 1989. She found working with the Pet Shop Boys fun and challenging, as Tennant requested lower vocals than she was used to. Minnelli was particularly pleased with the song "So Sorry, I Said," stating that the lyrics were very true to her. The album includes a cover of "Rent," originally by the Pet Shop Boy, as well as "Losing My Mind" from the musical "Follies" (1971), "Twist in My Sobriety" originally recorded by Tanita Tikaram, "Love Pains" originally performed by Yvonne Elliman, and "Tonight Is Forever," also originally by the Pet Shop Boy. The album's title was inspired by a comment from Minnelli's friend Janet Street-Porter about one of her outfit. William Ruhlman of AllMusic gave the album three and a half stars out of five, noting that in most song, Minnelli's voice was overshadowed by the electronically generated beats and sound. He considered "Losing My Mind" the most interesting track and concluded that "Results" felt more like a Pet Shop Boys album than a Liza Minnelli record. Edwin J Bernard of the English magazine Number One praised the album as the best release of 1989. He described the upbeat songs as a journey through discotheque, with each song highlighting a different style of modern dance music. Bernard felt that Minnelli's theatrical voice seemed out of place initially but eventually created a unique sound, which he dubbed "camp pop." He also praised the lyrics for complementing Minnelli, allowing her to delve into eccentric aspects of love. The first single, "Losing My Mind," was released in August 1989 and became a major success in the UK, reaching number 6 on the chart. Minnelli promoted the song on various television programs in Europe and the United State. Three more singles from the album, "Don't Drop Bomb," "So Sorry, I Said," and "Love Pain," were released in 1989 and 1990, all charting in the UK. Upon its release, the album reached the same position in the UK, while in Spain, it peaked at number thirteen and earned a gold certification. In the United State, it achieved a lower level of succe, reaching number 128 on the Billboard 200. .
