About
The complicated genius of Richard Pryor surfaces in embryonic form on his 1968 debut. Depicting himself as a loin-clothed bushman on the album's faux-National Geographic cover, Pryor embraces African-American stereotypes throughout this raucous live show, the better to undermine them. Confessions of adolescent insecurity ("Girls") make you want to hug the future star, who's even better when single-handedly voicing a variety of characters in longer pieces concerning black activism and army life.
