Settin’ the Pace is a jazz album by saxophonist John Coltrane, released by Prestige Records in December 1961 as PRLP 7213. Rather than documenting a contemporary session, the album compiles previously unissued recordings made on March 26, 1958, at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio in Hackensack, New Jersey. On these track, Coltrane plays tenor saxophone alongside pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chamber, and drummer Art Taylor. Coltrane had been working with Garland and Chambers since at least 1955 as part of Miles Davis’s group, while all four musicians had also appeared together on the Tenor Conclave sessions in 1956. As a quartet, they had already recorded two albums for Prestige: John Coltrane with the Red Garland Trio and Soultrane. The 1958 session focused on extended performances of three popular standard, as well as “Little Melonae,” a bebop composition by alto saxophonist Jackie McLean. These recordings remained unreleased for several years before being assembled into Settin’ the Pace. During the 1960, as Coltrane’s prominence increased, Prestige issued a number of archival releases without his direct input or approval. In 1970 the original mono recordings were electronically rechanneled into “fake stereo” and released as Trane’s Reign on Prestige’s Jazz Classic Serie.
