Billy Strings’ mama is on his mind. The bluegrass prodigy’s mother died in 2025 from a drug overdose, and <i>So Much for Goodbyes</i>, his fifth studio album, is a portrait of grief in all its layered complications. It’s hard enough to mourn the loss of a beloved parent, but Strings—who left home at 13 because his parents were consumed by their addictions, and ruminated on the impact of this on 2017’s <i>Turmoil & Tinfoil</i>—refuses to whitewash the thornier aspects of his relationship with his mother. Instead, <i>So Much for Goodbyes</i> tells the truth: that flawed parents, and people, are deserving of love and fond remembrance, in spite of their shortcomings; that devastation can infuriate, paralyze, and humble anyone at any stage of the grieving process; that picking an acoustic guitar is a meditative practice with the power to soothe and heal. Often, Strings’ furious fingers hold a mirror up to his emotional state, whether he’s frustrated with fate (<b>“Lucid Daydream”</b>), admitting his nostalgic tendency to try to “bring back old memories for one reason or another I let go” (<b>“I’m One of Those”</b>), or playing for the sake of simply carrying on through the impossible (<b>“I Like Train Songs”</b>). Death—that of his mother, but also the pondering of his own—looms large, and on <b>“Lay Me Down,”</b> he invites bluegrass legend Del McCoury to join him as he expresses his final wishes while imagining his funeral (“Raise nothing in my honor/It wasn’t worth the waste”). If a chord can capture what it sounds like for a lump to grow in your throat, <b>“Still I Crash,”</b> a conversation between Strings and his mother, achieves it: “I am still your one true friend/But as the seasons change, and you’re still out of range/I can hear your voice as it echoes through my head.”
