Four years since their last album <i>Let Love In</i>, 2010’s <i>Something for the Rest of Us</i> kicks in as if the Goo Goo Dolls had been running smoothly and in step year after year. The workmanlike perfection is something achieved by few bands. The Goo Goo Dolls deliver arena anthems without losing a step. Every song here sounds like it could debut on Modern Rock Radio or Adult Alternative and become an instant hit. The verses are all in place and the choruses are designed for maximum catchiness. “Sweetest Lie,” “Home” and “Say You’re Free” keep up the pace we’re accustomed to from the Dolls and the title track, “Hey Ya” and “Soldier” nail down the slower end. The sound is more layered and atmospheric in spots, denoting a greater seriousness that has come over them as singer Johnny Rzeznik looks out at the world around him and reflects on what it means to him and the band. Quite a heavy step in the end for a band that once were a bit of a goof. Nothing ‘goo goo’ here.
