About
Lush, billowing psych-pop is only the beginning of The Lazy Eyes’ appeal. Beneath that is a locked-in rhythmic drive and intuitive interplay developed from three of the four members playing together since meeting as early teens at a performing arts school in Sydney. After adding bassist Leon Karagic in 2015, the quartet perfected such a strong musical bond that their debut album features multiple instrumentals, including scene-setting opener "Intro" and the Khruangbin-esque “Hippo.” That sense of confidence beyond their years suffuses SongBook, a showcase for shifting arrangements and mind-bending self-production. “Fuzz Jam” and “Imaginary Girl” evoke The Beatles as much as Tame Impala, while wig-out guitars threaten to steal the scene on “Tangerine.” Rather than just spin out on dreamy tangents, The Lazy Eyes weave funky flourishes and sincere lyrics into these songs, aiming squarely for the hearts and hips of festival crowds to come.
