About

Stellar Regions is a posthumous album by John Coltrane, released by Impulse! Records (IMP 169). The material comes from tapes recorded on February 15, 1967, at Van Gelder Studio and later rediscovered in 1994 by Alice Coltrane, who also plays piano on the session and provided titles for the eight track. Not all of the music was entirely unreleased. The same take of ‘Offering’ had previously appeared on Coltrane’s final studio album Expression, while the track ‘Stellar Regions’ is an early version of ‘Venus’, later issued on Interstellar Space. The session itself took place one week before the sax-drums recordings that produced that album. The ensemble includes Rashied Ali on drums and Jimmy Garrison on ba, who briefly returned after leaving Coltrane’s group in 1966. Coltrane also plays alto saxophone on ‘Tranesonic’, an instrument he rarely used after the mid-1940. In liner note, David Wild observed that the recordings reflect a shift toward more concise form, while still extending Coltrane’s earlier free, multi-layered improvisational approach. Personnel: .
